When 3 or more notes are played at once, we call that grouping a “chord.” Within a major scales, these chords ALWAYS follow a set pattern that are based off each note of the scale: Major, minor, minor, Major, Major, minor and lastly, diminished.

This means that in the key of EMajor, the chords based off the E, A and B notes will yield Major chords. The minor chords will fall on the F#, G# and C# notes and that leaves D# as the designated diminished chord.

So a “chord scale” is simply the chords from a scale played in a successive manner. We can apply this to acoustic guitar for a number of different chord voicing possibilities and further, it’s definitely helpful to know these shapes and ideas as it gets you out of the rut of “stock,” run of the mill chord voicings and shapes...

Beginner Guitar Chord Lesson - Learn to Play B7

Learn how to play the B7 Guitar Chord with this free lesson. I added this post under “Basic Beginner” Chords as it is a basic 7th Chord that all beginners should know, but it is however one of the harder 7th chords to finger.

The B7 Guitar Chord (also known as the Dominant B 7th Chord) is often referred to as a Blues chord. Once you learn to play it, you will understand why. It just has a real bluesy sound to it. The B7 Chord is found by first locating the 1(root note), 3 and 5 positions (B, D# and F#) of the B Major Scale: B C# D# E F# G# A# B, and then adding a flat 7 note. To locate the flat 7 note, we first find the 7th note of the B Major scale (A#) and then go back a 1/2 step to the A Note.

So the notes of the B7 Chord are: B, D#, A and F#

Using a Guitar Capo For Beginners

A capo is an inexpensive yet very useful tool. You clamp the capo onto the frets of the fingerboard of your guitar and it allows you to instantly change the pitch of your guitar strings to a higher pitch. How high you make the pitch of your guitar depends on the fret you clamp the capo on and each fret will take the pitch one half step higher.

This incredibly useful tool has a number of advantages. If you are playing with a band and you want to match your guitar to another musician or singer, its as simple as clamping on your capo to the appropriate key.

Another advantage is with playing chords. A chord that is difficult to play in an open position can be played in an easier way by using a capo. This is wonderful if you are a beginner and want to learn a song that has difficult chords.

So if you don’t already own a capo, I highly recommend that you head out to your local music store or go online and purchase this inexpensive and highly useful tool for the guitar, the capo....

Guitar Practice Routine – Chord Change Excercise

A difficult hurdle to overcome as a beginner guitar playing is mastering your chord changes. You must be able to change from one chord to another quickly and without error.

You are likely to get frustrated in the beginning as your fingers won’t do what you want them to do. This is normal and it will take time for you develop what’s called “Muscle Memory”. Muscle Memory develops from performing an activity over and over again. You perform an activity so often, that eventually it becomes second nature and you don’t even think about it. This is what will happen eventually with your guitar playing.

Here is an excellent chord practice routine that you can add to your daily practice sessions. This is a great way to improve your chord changes and develop that muscle memory. Guitar scales are one of the most effective practice exercises that you can do as a beginner acoustic guitar player. I know guitar scales can seem a bit boring, especially when you are playing them every day, but please hang in there and learn how to play them. Guitar scales build strength, speed and dexterity and will familiarize you with the guitar and will make you a better musician in the long run.

Your best course of action is to learn the major scales first. I made this process as easy as possible for you by including videos below on how to play all of the major guitar scales.

Do not try and play all of these acoustic guitar scales all at once. Learn the first scale listed below until you can play it all on your own from memory without any mistakes, and then move on to the next. So you are looking to further your learning as an acoustic guitarist but not sure what to do next? There is a vast array of options available to you and things can get rather confusing. You basically have two options when learning how to play acoustic guitar: Hire a guitar teacher or Learn on your own. This topic is open for debate. Honestly, I feel it really depends on you and your particular needs as an individual. We will explore both options in this article, so that you will be able to make a better decision.

Learning on your Own

Learning on your own can be broken down into two simple categories: You can either learn for free or you can invest in a home study course.

Learn For Free

Learning for free is definitely a possibility. With the Internet at your fingertips, anything is possible these days. There are a handful of excellent free guitar websites that offer lessons and other great resources for those of us on a tight budget. However, some of these free sites and resources may be difficult to locate and not all of them are created by professionals. So you may find, after some time, that the free route may not be enough or may prove to be too frustrating.

One huge advantage to the free learning, besides being cost effective, is that it gives you the option to test the waters before you invest any money into private lessons or home study courses. Guitar playing is not for everyone. You may find after playing for a short while that your heart isn’t into it. In order to become a good guitar player you must be passionate about playing, have patience and dedication. Without those qualities, I am afraid you won’t get very far....

The Beginners Guide to Playing the Acoustic Guitar

Learning acoustic guitar is an extremely broad topic. One that would no doubt fill many books. The following guide focuses on some of the most important aspects of playing guitar providing you with an excellent starting point. This guide was written for the right handed, absolute beginner using a steel string guitar. My apologies to all of you left handed guitarists in advance.

ABOUT THE STEEL STRING GUITAR

The steel string guitar is a masterpiece of musical instrument engineering. Before the steel string, the acoustic guitar was very limited. The guitars of old were very quiet when played, so much so, that a guitarist was not able to play along with other musicians as the sound produced was simply too low. In order to overcome this shortcoming, the steel string guitar was born. The steel string produced a louder sound, but also caused too much stress on the instrument because of the added weight. The body construction therefore needed to be altered to accommodate the heavier strings. These changes not only made the guitar stronger, but they also increased the life of the guitar.

GUITAR STYLES - WHAT STYLE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Guitars are available in a variety of different styles and sizes and it really depends on what is most comfortable and enjoyable for you. Popular guitar styles include the Dreadnought, Nex, Artist, Classic and Jumbo. Each guitar has its own unique look, feel and sound. The larger styles like the Jumbo and Dreadnought produce more bass and are more difficult to hold and play. The smaller models like the Nex and Artist favor the midranges and treble and are much easier to hold and play. The Classic guitar is a whole different animal. It can only be played using nylon strings and produces a sound that is noticeably different than steel string guitars. So if you aren’t sure what guitar style is right for you, then head over to your nearest music center and give them all a test drive.

How to Change Your Guitar Strings - Instructions for Acoustic and Electric

Changing your guitar strings can be a difficult undertaking if you are a beginner and are not sure what you are doing. Many beginners frown upon the idea and usually pay professionals to change their strings. But why? With the proper guidance and practice, you can be changing your strings in no time and save a lot of money in the process. I have included two excellent videos below that will provide you with all the necessary instructions and steps to changing guitar strings on both an acoustic and electric guitar.

The most important part of the string changing process however is the strings. Make certain you purchase quality guitar strings. It really isn’t worth it to save a bit of money on poor quality strings as it will adversely affect your playing experience.

Acoustic Guitar Strings

For acoustic guitar, my favorite strings are from Martin and I prefer the medium weight strings. They produce a wonderful sound. They are quite strong and can stand up to my heavy playing. I do not personally like light strings. They are much easier to play, but I do not like the sound they produce. If you are just starting out however, and have not built up enough strength in your hands and have not developed callouses, then you may have to use light strings for a while. Once your hands are stronger and you have developed callouses, you can then upgrade to medium strings. It really is a matter of personal preference though. I had to experiment with a bunch of different strings before I found the ones that I am most comfortable with.

Electric Guitar Strings

For electric guitar strings, I prefer D’Addario. I have been using this brand of strings ever since I began playing electric guitar and have never felt the need to look elsewhere. As far as the thickness of the the strings are concerned, the same holds true for electric guitar as does the acoustic guitar. A thicker string is going to produce a better quality sound but it is going to be more difficult to play, so again, I like to use a medium weight string with electric as well. You have to experiment with electric guitar strings as well to find the one you are most comfortable with. I hope this at least gives you a good starting point on choosing the right strings.
